LeFiell Company Completes Construction of State-of-the-Art
Multi-Species Slaughter Plant in Bucaramanga, Colombia
On Wednesday, November 18, 1998 the Frigosan Company of Bucaramanga, Colombia started
production in the newest multi-species animal slaughtering and fabrication plant.
This plant has the capacity of slaughtering 600 cattle, 1000 pigs, and-or 500 sheep per
day. The plant has the capacity to bone 100 carcasses and is also equipped with its
own LeFiell rendering system.
Dr. Enrique Muñoz, the principal owner and CEO of Frigosan contracted with the LeFiell
Company of Reno, Nevada USA, to design and supply the equipment for this project.
LeFiell supplied all the equipment for slaughter, rendering, edible by-products, and beef
fabrication, as well as internationally recongnized trainers to start the plant.
The LeFiell trainers have also been instrumental in working with the new management in
training their staff in GMPs and SSOPs, similar to what is a required in USDA plants, with
the idea that eventually they will set up a voluntary HACCP program suited to their unique
market conditions.
This plant will slaughter mostly Brahma type cattle ranging in live weight from 400kg
to 900kg. The average slaughter yield is 58 percent, which is about 3 percent higher
than the old municipal plant was able to achieve. The pig line has the capability to
slaughter pigs as heavy as 400kg, again with an increase in slaughter yield--they are able
to get this improvement on the slaughter lines by the efficient use of equipment supplied
by LeFiell. This facility is one of the first plants in Colombia where the carcasses
will be chilled to a temperature of 5 degrees centigrade deep muscle within a 16 hour
period. With the fabrication department, Frigosan will supply vacuum packaged meats
to local and Bogota supermarkets.
This new Frigosan plant was built to replace the old municipal plant that had been
existence for almost 50 years. The Frigosan plant was constructed with private
funding, giving Dr. Muñoz and his associates the freedom to work unrestricted with
LeFiell to achieve the most modern plant in Colombia.
